ARTIST STATEMENT

My multidisciplinary practice explores the body as a site where personal experience and wider systems of belief and power converge. Across painting, sculpture, installation and hand-drawn animation, I create fantastical yet grounded realities, drawing on anatomy, medical imagery and the natural world. Informed by lived experience, interviews and personal accounts, I use imagined and heightened imagery to explore the emotional and bodily effects of political, religious and technological systems.

My fascination with anatomy began through my mother’s work as a midwife and deepened through experiences of grief and working in dissection rooms at Oxford. Encounters with the body through birth and death have led me to develop a personal mythology around the metabolic nature of life: its continual processes of growth, decay, transformation and renewal. The female body has become central to this exploration, appearing as both a living presence and a contested space - sacred yet consumable, idealised yet controlled. Rotting fruits take on bodily and reproductive forms, while crates, vessels and restrictive structures evoke the ways bodies can be contained, classified and made available for consumption.

My making is intuitive and often involves fragmentation and reconstruction. Working with paint, cardboard, found objects, light and digital media, I build, dismantle, encase and project upon bodies and their environments. I am also drawn to simple, visible mechanisms that retain human agency, creating a tension with technologies that increasingly operate beyond our understanding and control.
